Celebrating Holidays

Greeting from my bunny Otis, who celebrated Ostara with my husband and I two weeks ago. Though he took a sniff at my colored eggs, he got much more excited by his feast of baby carrots and dessert of blueberries. He is my current "baby" as my children are grown and starting families of their own. None of them currently share my Wiccan beliefs and they celebrate the more traditional of the Christian holidays, but they are accepting of my ways nevertheless. I have always told them the importance of finding one's own way to be in the world, and to seek in the Socratic tradition of "question and challenge." Once you do find your way, I stressed that it is also important to be accepting of others for the sake of kindness. I am proud of my children and often they tell me that they are proud of me! So as they celebrate the Easter holiday, I will celebrate the wonderful diversity that exists in our big extended family.

  1. Otis is adorable! I love the "question and challenge" philosophy for finding one's way in the world. And acceptance and kindness toward our differences really is so important. What a lovely post!

  2. Thanks Felicitas! It has taken much patience and character building to be at peace with all the varied viewpoints... but it is definitely worth the effort!

  3. What a cute rabbit and the eggs are so pretty. I haven't dyed eggs in many, many years, primarily because I don't like hard boiled eggs! lol

  4. By the way, is the blog title "A Solitary Witch" a nod to Anne Sexton's Her Kind?

  5. Thank you Tree! I just like dying the eggs and trying to get my favorite colors deep and dark. Sometimes I write a wish on them and then hide them in the yard hoping a fairy will find it and grant me my wish. I'm still very much in touch with my child side.

  6. I'm not familiar with Anne Sexton... yet. It's more of a reference to my personal beliefs as an eclectic practitioner of witchcraft. I have always been alone in this pursuit, although I'm trying to reach out to like minded others.

  7. Well, I made a mistake. The poem by Anne Sexton uses "possessed witch" not solitary! It's still a good poem, though.

I'm sure you will find quite a few like minds on the Internet. If you haven't already, have you attended any Unitarian churches? I'm not sure about witchcraft but you can usually find a few Pagans there.

I think it's great that you have raised your children to be open minded searchers. We need more parents like that.

  8. Thank you Tree!"Her Kind" is a great poem, like an anthem for the brave, flawed, and misunderstood. Love it! Anne Sexton is a poetess that will certainly get more of my attention.
